TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is familiar with earthquakes resulting from the collision of tectonic plates, and according to scientists, Taiwan is moving toward the Philippines.

Cheng Ming-dean, director of the Weather Forecast Center of the Central Weather Bureau, said the statistics from National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering show that Taiwan is moving in the southeast direction.

And if this continues, the island is moving toward the Philipines. Earthquakes occur in Taiwan island quite frequently due to seismic activity.

Taiwan was created by the Eurasian Plate and Philippine Sea Plate. The two collide with each other, and the island was formed through orogeny. This is why Taiwan has many high mountains and earthquakes.

However, the plates move not only during earthquakes, they are actually constantly moving and releasing energy. Earth scientists are able to observe the changes on Earth's surfaces, hoping to find out the precursors of big earthquakes.

"If we can combine the characteristics with the data we already know about earthquakes, and gradually maybe we can find some corresponding relationships, then we can identify so-called precursors, which can provide a reference for future warnings," Cheng said.
