KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) - A distracted driver crushed eight expensive bicycles belonging to a group of cyclists who planned to partake in a cycling event in Kaoshiung, southern Taiwan on Sunday (Nov. 6).
The driver reportedly wasn't aware of the culvert's 7.5 ft (2.3 m) height limit and drove straight into the underpass. The bikes were stuck in between the ceiling and the car, all crushed and out of shape. Experts estimate that the total value of the bikes is at least US$21,794 (NT$700k).
The bicycles are made of aluminum alloy and carbon fiber, meaning that they have a lower chance of being successfully repaired. One very high-tech bicycle even cost nearly US$5,600 (NT$180k), according to media reports. The driver was also fined US$28-56 (NT$900-1800) for violating traffic laws.
