TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Soccer fans around the world are anticipating the 2022 FIFA World Cup as it draws near. The games are set to take place in Qatar between Nov. 20 and Dec. 18. In Taiwan, the Global Workers Organization (GWO Taiwan) will also host a "Migrant Workers World Cup" on Oct. 29 and other activities throughout the weekend.
The local "World Cup," hosted by GWO Taiwan and its intended celebration of diversity and inclusion, is especially significant after it was revealed that many migrant workers working in Qatar for the preparation of the games suffered systematic abuse and were exploited.
The two-day event will unfold at the Chaoma Soccer Field in Taichung, between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the second day, a closing ceremony is scheduled at 4 p.m. during which the winning team will be crowned.
Through the power of soccer, GWO Taiwan hopes that migrant workers can gather and enjoy the games as well as make their voices heard on the social changes still needed in Taiwan. Since 2015, GWO Taiwan has collaborated with many foreign workers to create the soccer programs and promote awareness of equality and human rights in Taiwan.
Though Taiwan has yet to gain a ticket into the global soccer field that is FIFA, these local games continue to provide a stage for talented soccer players around the world and raise awareness for the rights of foreign workers.
