TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan is poised to become a super-aged society by 2025, many seniors on the brink of retirement are looking for ways to stay in the workforce.
Wu Chun-lai, an executive consultant at the Strong Generation Association pointed out that "their physical conditions are good, they're energetic and willing to work, and they have a lot of passion for their job." He added: "They are at the top of their game at this time."
With the current life expectancy at 80-87 years in Taiwan, the Ministry of Labor rolled out the "Middle-aged and Elderly Employment Promotion Act" in 2020. However, tallies show that most businesses benefiting from the act are in the service industry, including security companies.
"Perhaps there can be a cap on the number of subsidies each company can receive," suggested National Taiwan University assistant professor Hsin Ping-lung"We can lower the threshold appropriately so that it would be easier for them to apply and increase their willingness to keep their employees."
Experts also called on the government to look beyond recruiting unemployed elders. Instead, they should focus on those on the brink of retirement—mainly people between 50 and 60 years of age. Besides this, the employment system should also have policies on assigning duties and lowering age discrimination risks to build a truly age-friendly employment environment.
