TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Many employees have had the experience of working remotely during the pandemic, clocking in and out of work every day, likely away from the office.
Speaking at her company, Ma Hsiao-chun, an office worker told TVBS News: "We clock in using Wi-Fi. When you arrive at the office, you connect to the company's Wi-Fi and press the clock-in button. We can also clock in via GPS now, meaning you can press the clock-in button when you arrive at the company."
"The system will detect whether you are at the company at that time,"she added.
When looking for jobs, many people nowadays select a position based not only on the salary but also on the company's benefits. Many also look at the working hours.
"I don't like it when I have to deal with work-related issues after working hours or when I am not scheduled to work. It'll feel like I have had no time to rest. If it is a more urgent case, it'd be better to respond, but there are not as many situations like this," she continued. "I prefer to complete the tasks during working hours."
Chang Chien-wen, deputy general manager of an information research company, remarked that "due to the pandemic, a new mode of working has developed, which has led to many of the original boundaries between working and non-working hours being blurred. Is it working hours-based or responsibility-based? This is a topic of discussion that is often brought up."
If we look at the Labor Standards Act, there are clear regulations even when it comes to responsibility-based jobs. If the job fits into specific occupations, such as lawyers, insurance sales, real estate brokers, and the aviation industry, as long as the employer and employee establish a contract, their working hours will not be limited to the maximum working hours set in the Labor Standards Act, meaning the working hours can be extended.
So when it comes to working hours, the least you can do is to get a clear picture when you are interviewing for the job and find something more suitable to your expectations. And more importantly, always make sure to know your rights and protect your rights at all times.
