TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's meteorological agency, on Monday (Oct. 20) issued a severe weather warning for northern Taiwan as Typhoon Fengshen's (風神颱風) outer circulation brings heavy rains and strong winds. The CWA forecasts peak rainfall on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 20-21) in Greater Taipei, Keelung, and Yilan.

CWA warns Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City could see up to 490 millimeters of rain within 24 hours. The CWA predicted mountainous areas in Yilan and Taoyuan might receive 340 millimeters of rain, prompting school and work closures. The northeast monsoon is expected to intensify at night, causing more pronounced rainfall, with weather conditions stabilizing by Oct. 26.

The Look Weather (觀氣象看天氣) Facebook page cautioned that the current storm rivals a typhoon, with persistent rain in the north and east until the weekend. The page noted the frontal rainfall is just beginning and will intensify tonight as the northeast monsoon strengthens. CWA added that strong winds are expected with gusts of 9 to 11 on the Beaufort scale (81-117 kmh) in Penghu, Green Island, Orchid Island, Matsu, and coastal areas from Taoyuan to Chiayi. ◼
