TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨), Taiwan's main opposition party, responded Monday (Aug. 11) to Huang Kuo-chang's mayoral announcement by stating they will address their relationship with the Taiwan People's Party and initiate dialogue. The KMT's response came after Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) announced his candidacy for New Taipei City mayor earlier that day, expressing willingness to collaborate with the party. The TPP chairman emphasized his commitment to becoming the best option for voters.

The KMT stated they will initiate dialogue with the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) after the next party chairman takes office. Huang declared his intention to uphold the two-year clause at a party congress Sunday (Aug. 10), affirming he will not seek re-election as a legislator. The TPP leader's decision clears the path for his mayoral campaign after his term ends Jan. 31, 2026.

Huang hinted at taking on a significant role post-legislature, with primary focus on the 2026 mayoral elections. He reinforced his determination to run for New Taipei City mayor, asserting that the goal has never changed while maintaining goodwill toward the Kuomintang. The announcement marks a pivotal moment in Taiwan politics, setting the stage for potential KMT-TPP alliances in next year's election. ◼
