TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) on Friday (Nov. 22) reported 30 fatalities from traffic accidents during the week of Nov. 9 to Nov. 15. Pingtung County led with four deaths, while Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, and Miaoli County each reported three fatalities.
With 148 cumulative traffic deaths, Taoyuan City remains the area with the highest fatalities, prompting the Executive Yuan (行政院) to call for a special improvement report earlier this month. The city also has the highest pedestrian fatalities, with 21 deaths, despite a 4.2% decrease in pedestrian deaths nationwide. The MOTC has dispatched personnel to assist Taoyuan City, aiming for a 7% reduction in overall fatalities by the end of the year.
The ministry's data reveals that, as of Nov. 15, total 24-hour traffic fatalities reached 1,477, marking a 5.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Taoyuan City, Tainan City, New Taipei City, Taichung City, and Pingtung County rank as the top five regions for overall traffic deaths. With the onset of colder weather potentially increasing drunk driving incidents, the MOTC plans to announce more preventive measures.
