TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The number of single-person households in Taiwan has exceeded 3 million, highlighting a significant social transformation. According to the Ministry of Interior (MOI, 內政部), 3,041,975 households were composed of individuals living alone in 2020, underscoring a growing trend towards solo living.

Huang Chao-jen (黃兆仁) from the Commerce Development Research Institute (財團法人商業發展研究院) explained that Taiwan's single economy surpasses NT$500 billion annually. This economic shift reflects a broader societal change toward individual lifestyles.

OpenTable data indicates a rise in solo dining reservations in 2024, with Germany experiencing an 18% increase and the United Kingdom seeing a 14% hike, suggesting a wider global trend. The restaurant industry has responded by offering individual meals like solo hot pots and BBQs, which have gained popularity.

Kao Lin-chen (高林禎), a PR director at a restaurant group, noted substantial growth in the market for solo dining options, fueled by the increasing single population. This trend is reshaping the dining landscape, catering to those who prefer eating alone.

Chen Chang-sheng (陳長聖), a psychiatrist at Taiwan Adventist Hospital (台安醫院), explained that modern society's focus on individualism has led to greater acceptance of solitary activities. However, he cautioned that humans are inherently social beings who derive security and happiness from interaction, noting that elderly individuals living alone often report lower happiness levels.

The evolving single economy presents both opportunities and challenges. As businesses adapt to cater to individual consumers, the social implications of increased solitary living warrant attention, posing questions about societal well-being and community.
