TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen (盧秀燕) emphasized on Monday (Oct. 7) that the city government subsidizing an F1 racing event with NT$8 million, which features numerous top-tier racing cars, is a minor expense compared to its potential benefits.
During a city council policy report, Councilor Huang Shou-da (黃守達) criticized the subsidy, highlighting that the event's overall cost is approximately NT$22 million.
He argued that the city's contribution of 36% is excessive and may need more resources from other sports organizations. Huang also noted that the Sports Bureau (運動局) added NT$9 million to its 2024 budget to support sports associations. Yet, this showcase event does not align to enhance the city's competitive sports capabilities.
Sports Bureau Director Yu Chih-hsiang (游志祥) defended the subsidy, stating it aligns with its guidelines to promote top-tier events and boost the economy.
However, Huang contended that despite attracting crowds and attention, the event's execution needed more transparency and effective marketing of the city. He urged a focus on promoting racing knowledge and culture to prevent the event from becoming merely a personal showcase for the mayor.
