TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Despite surviving a harrowing accident just a day earlier, Air Force Captain Hsieh Pei-hsun (謝沛勳) vowed on Wednesday (Sept. 11) to continue flying, showcasing his unwavering determination to stay in the air.

Recounting his jet crash, Hsieh said, "When I think of the accident, I still feel the aftermath, but I won't give up flying because of it."

The accident occurred at 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday when Hsieh's Mirage 2000 fighter jet lost power during a night training mission. Hsieh ejected and landed in the sea, sustaining no life-threatening injuries. Rescuers found him at 10:22 p.m. 16.7 miles southwest of Gangnan Village and transported him to Tungs' Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital (台中童綜合醫院).

Following a night of rest, Hsieh, who suffered a cervical spine contusion, resumed normal eating and conversation. He expressed his determination to recover swiftly and return to his beloved flying duties, saying he hopes to get well soon and return to his favorite post to continue to defend his country and the skies of Taiwan.

Deputy Director of Taoyuan City Government Civil Affairs Department (桃園市政府民政局) Lan Pin-chun (藍品畯) visited Hsieh, who is a Taoyuan resident, at the hospital on Wednesday to offer support.

Hsieh's wife also remarked that she respects his decision to return to flying, while his mother-in-law, who has two sons in the military, affirmed the family's support, stating they would be his greatest supporter.

Hsieh's resolve highlights the dedication of Taiwan's military personnel in safeguarding the nation's skies. Further developments on his recovery and return to duty will be closely monitored.
