TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tseng Wen-sheng (曾文生), chairman of Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台灣電力公司), announced Thursday (Aug. 15) that the company could break even this year if it receives a government subsidy of NT$100 billion. He emphasized the significant impact of electricity price adjustments on consumer prices and promised to handle the matter prudently.

Tseng stated that Taipower will provide objective data, including cost structures and revenue status, to the government-held price review committee to make the final decision. The committee will convene in September to determine whether to raise electricity prices in October.

Tseng explained that adjustments in electricity prices also depend on international energy price trends and government subsidy budgets. The government has allocated subsidies for 2024 and 2025, which will influence the committee's final decision on the adjustment range.

As of the end of last year, Taipower had accumulated losses of NT$380 billion. To ensure the company's stable operation, the Executive Yuan has approved an additional budget of NT$100 billion for this year and included another NT$100 billion in next year's central government budget, totaling NT$200 billion in subsidies.
