TAIPEI (TVBS News) — National Academy for Educational Research (NAER, 國家教育研究院) President Cheng Yuan-chuan (鄭淵全) on Tuesday (July 16) highlighted that Taiwan's new national curriculum, known as the 108 curriculum, is "progressive." He emphasized that the curriculum will undergo minor technological field adjustments to keep pace with developments such as artificial intelligence (AI).
Cheng's statement responds to debates on whether the curriculum needs significant revisions. Since Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao (鄭英耀) took office in May, he has stated on several occasions that although the Ministry of Education (MOE) traditionally overhauls the curriculum every 10 years, no law mandates such revisions. He reassured parents and teachers that there would be no major changes to the curriculum at this stage.
As the NAER is responsible for curriculum revisions, Cheng Yuan-chuan noted that students have shown strong performance in areas such as mathematics, science, and reading, and adjustments will be made within this framework.
While the 108 curriculum will not undergo significant revisions, Education Minister Cheng reiterated that its content must remain current with rolling amendments. He also emphasized that the bilingual policy would proceed without altering the curriculum but would be continuously evaluated and enhanced to improve the learning environment.
To illustrate the incorporation of English into daily life, Minister Cheng provided examples such as offering extra fries for ordering in English at fast-food restaurants. He encouraged local governments to collaborate and brainstorm on these initiatives.
