TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Economic Affairs J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) acknowledged on Tuesday (July 2) that the decommissioning of Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 (核能三號廠1號機) will lead to a 3-4% drop in power distribution. However, he assured that the shortfall would be made up by the Taoyuan Datan (桃園大潭) and Nanpu Power Plant (南部電廠), ensuring no power shortage.
Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) announced the same day during a legislative inquiry that Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 will be legally decommissioned on July 27.
When Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才) questioned the frequency of power outages, Kuo responded that power interruptions from Taiwan Power Company (台電) have decreased by over 70%. He attributed the perceived increase to more media coverage.
Regarding the 2025 Nuclear-free Homeland Policy (2025非核家園政策), Premier Cho affirmed that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government is gradually moving towards a nuclear-free homeland. He emphasized that the government's top priority is maintaining a stable power supply.
Lo further inquired about the power distribution percentage after the nuclear plant's decommissioning. Kuo clarified that it would decrease by roughly 3-4%, but the Taoyuan Datan and Southern Power Plant would compensate for the loss, promising no future power shortages.
