TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan embraces sustainable transportation, the debate between electric and fuel scooters, the nation's most popular mode of transport, intensifies. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) revealed in its 2023 report that owning an electric scooter costs an average of NT$9,897 annually, surpassing the NT$8,591 required for fuel scooters by NT$1,306, making the latter a more economical choice for consumers.

Electric scooters, known for their quiet operation and instant torque, are gaining popularity despite their higher costs and the emerging challenge of adequate charging infrastructure. Kisplay, the editor-in-chief of Saydigi-Tech, highlighted the durability of electric scooters, noting, "Electric motors will not break down; only the axle will become thinner because of continuous use, but it will not affect the use." He added that with an average lifespan of 20 to 30 years and the possibility of repairs if the company remains operational, electric scooters present a more sustainable option.

However, the rise in electric scooter users has spotlighted the need for improved battery technology and charging infrastructure. Cliff Chuang (莊秉賢), the editor-in-chief of Bike In, emphasized the importance of breakthroughs in battery technology. "Without significant advancements in battery capacity or the rapid development of charging stations, many users will find it challenging to charge their electric vehicles," Chuang warned.

Despite the higher annual cost and infrastructure hurdles, electric scooters offer lower maintenance needs compared to their ICE counterparts, which require regular replacement of brake fluid, spark plugs, and other wear-and-tear parts. As Taiwan's residents weigh the pros and cons of electric versus fuel scooters, considerations of environmental sustainability and familiarity with new technology play crucial roles in their decisions.
