TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a move reflecting the lowest egg prices Taiwan has seen in nearly two years, major retailers across the island announced on Thursday (June 13) significant price cuts on eggs and related products starting Friday (June 14).
This decision comes amid public scrutiny over breakfast shops continuing to charge extra for eggs despite the market slump.
PX Mart (全聯) led the charge by reducing the price of boxed eggs from NT$50 to NT$47, effective Friday. Concurrently, Carrefour (家樂福) announced a price drop of approximately NT$5 to NT$8 on its room-temperature, washed and selected eggs.
This series of price adjustments is a direct response to the Taipei Egg Traders Association and the Poultry Association Republic of China's call for vendors to lower their prices to reflect the market's actual conditions.
In addition to the price cuts, retailers are rolling out promotions to attract customers. PX Mart is offering a special deal from June 14 to June 17, where customers can purchase two packs of Assam tea eggs (美味堂阿薩姆茶葉蛋) for just NT$119, down from the original price of NT$65 per pack.
Far Eastern A.Mart (愛買) has also jumped on the bandwagon, adjusting the price of a 10-pack of room-temperature, washed, and selected eggs to between NT$47 and NT$49, a decrease from last week's NT$51.
These price reductions and promotions are a testament to the retailers' efforts to pass on the benefits of the current egg price downturn to consumers.
As the market adjusts to these new prices, it remains to be seen how this will affect the pricing strategies of breakfast shops and other food vendors moving forward.
