TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan grapples with soaring temperatures, the Health Promotion Administration (HPA) issued a stark warning on Tuesday (June 11) following a significant rise in heat-related illnesses.
According to a news release, in April 2024, the number of people seeking treatment for heat injuries doubled from the previous year, jumping from 111 to 231 cases. This alarming increase has prompted health officials to urge the public to take preventive measures against the heat.
Wu Chao-chun (吳昭軍), director-general of the HPA, emphasized avoiding or minimizing exposure to high temperatures during summer activities. He advised staying cool, hydrating, and being mindful of one's physical and mental condition to prevent heat injuries.
Wu specifically highlighted six high-risk groups, including infants, people over 65, individuals with chronic diseases, outdoor workers, athletes, and those who are overweight. These groups are particularly susceptible to heat injuries and should be vigilant about symptoms.
Symptoms of heat injuries can range from an inability to sweat, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting to more severe signs like confusion, cramps, and even unconsciousness.
Wu stressed that anyone experiencing these symptoms should immediately seek a cooler environment and lower their body temperature. If necessary, medical attention should be sought without delay.
As Taiwan continues to face extreme heat, the HPA's warnings are a critical reminder to prioritize health and safety during these challenging times.
