TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Health and Welfare Chiu Tai-yuan (邱泰源) highlighted on Wednesday (May 22) the increasing political pressures at the World Health Assembly (WHA), emphasizing China's growing interference.
As the 77th WHA approaches, set to take place from May 28 to June 1 in Geneva, Switzerland, Taiwan faces its eighth consecutive year without an invitation. Chiu called for unity and increased efforts to garner international support amidst these challenges.
Taiwan's Persistent Efforts
Despite the lack of an invitation to the WHA, Chiu announced plans to lead a World Health Organization (WHO) action team to Geneva. This marks his fifth journey to the assembly, leveraging his experience as a former legislator and council member at the World Medical Association.
He recounted difficulties faced by Taiwanese representatives, including journalists and students, attempting to enter the WHA venue, Palais des Nations, last year.
Global Support for Taiwan
Chiu emphasized the Taiwan Medical Association's dedication to global health issues, following the WHA proceedings around the clock during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also highlighted the international medical community's support for Taiwan, noting the World Medical Association's resolution backing Taiwan's participation in WHO meetings. This support underscores the global recognition of Taiwan's contributions to health and its ongoing struggle for international representation.
As the WHA convenes next week, Taiwan's absence underscores its geopolitical challenges. However, the island's determination and the international support it garners suggest a continued push for inclusion in global health discussions.
