TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) visited the Formosa 1 (海洋竹南風力發電場), Taiwan's first offshore wind farm, in Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, on Tuesday (May 7).

This visit underscored Taiwan's commitment to green energy development, with Chen highlighting the nation's leading position in offshore wind power among Asian democracies.

A Vision for Green Energy

During his visit, Chen praised the achievements in green energy development and expressed his determination to continue promoting offshore wind power as a "national green energy" initiative.

He recalled witnessing the spectacular transformation of the offshore wind farms since 2016 when he served as vice president. Chen credited President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) with prioritizing green energy and pension reform as his key tasks since their collaboration began in 2006.

Their decision in 2008 to halt the construction of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant in favor of focusing on solar and wind energy has been pivotal, he added.

Challenges and Achievements

Chen acknowledged the efforts of various sectors, especially wind energy companies, in overcoming challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He emphasized the importance of preparing for the carbon tax Europe will impose starting in 2026 and the pressure on tech companies to use 100% renewable energy.

With the first demonstration wind farm completed, supplying electricity to over 60% of households in Miaoli County, and the second wind farm, "Formosa 2," set to supply 380,000 households, Taiwan is well on its way to achieving its goal of 15 gigawatts of offshore wind power.

Chen's confidence in Taiwan's continued progress and its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 reflects the nation's strong capability in green energy development.

The Premier's reaffirmation of Taiwan's leadership in offshore wind power in Asia and its ongoing efforts to meet the 2050 net-zero emissions goal highlights the country's dedication to sustainable and autonomous energy development.
