TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The head of the Department of Industrial Technology at the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Chiou Chyou-huey, announced on Friday (April 26) that NVIDIA plans to establish its first research and development center in Asia in Taiwan, coupled with the largest supercomputer in the country.
Chiou examined Taiwan's talent pool, infrastructure, and hardware facilities as the primary draws for international businesses. The investment decisions of ASML, Applied Materials, and LAM Research in Taiwan were prompted by the country's highly skilled and disciplined workforce, a robust semiconductor ecosystem, and internationally competitive ICT manufacturers.
Chiou noted that Taiwanese manufacturers create over 90% of AI servers. Taiwan must develop associated technologies like cooling and heterogeneous packaging to be competitive in the ICT sector.
It is her opinion that Taiwan ought to allocate resources towards the advancement of discriminative and generative AI. AI may open new possibilities in every business, including high-tech, service, and traditional sectors.
Chiou said that Taiwan's extensive manufacturing and biomedical sector expertise should be leveraged to extract AI data learning techniques, convey experience, and market AI systems globally.
