TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is bracing for two significant weather fronts next week, according toTaiwan Integrated Disaster Prevention of Technology Engineering Consulting director Chia Hsin-hsing on Thursday (April 18).
Chia warned on his YouTube channel that the fronts, coupled with southwestern winds, could bring heavy thunderstorms and strong winds, potentially more severe than today's weather.
Earlier today, a severe thunderstorm hit Taipei, with rainfall so intense that umbrellas were unable to fully shield against the downpour.
The Central Weather Administration's Weather Forecast Center Section Chief Lin Ping-yu noted that the storm was primarily north of Miaoli, particularly between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., with rainfall amounts between 50-70 millimeters in the northern regions.
Chia said today's torrential rain was sudden and fast, with the Taipei area receiving more than 80 millimeters of rain in three hours, causing flooding and soaking those who ventured out.
Next week's weather fronts, influenced by southwestern winds, are expected Tuesday to Wednesday (April 23-24) and Friday to Saturday (April 26-27).
Chia warned that next Friday's southwestern wind will be stronger, and residents should be prepared for the possibility of severe thunderstorms and strong winds, particularly in Taitung and Hualien.
From Tuesday to Wednesday, localized showers or thunderstorms are expected in the western half of the island, with sporadic showers in Yilan and Hualien.
On Thursday, sporadic showers are expected in the north, with localized showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon. From Friday to Saturday, the western half of the island could see thunderstorms or showers, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms and strong winds.
Chia cautioned that forecasts beyond five days are subject to change and urged residents to stay updated with the latest weather information.
