ZHONGSHAN, China (TVBS News) — In an emotionally charged visit to the birthplace of Sun Yat-sen, former President Ma Ying-jeou highlighted the revolutionary leader's efforts toward a unified and prosperous China. Accompanied by Pan Xianzhang, the deputy director of China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), Ma's visit to Sun's former residence and the subsequent laying of flowers at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was a poignant reminder of the historical ties binding Taiwan and China.

Speaking at the media, Ma choked up as he recollected Sun Yat-sen's revolution, which aimed at establishing a nation based on freedom, democracy, and equal wealth. He remarked, "Dr. Sun Yat-sen led the revolution for forty years, striving to establish a free, united, and prosperous China, seeking happiness and well-being for the people." This vision, Ma stressed, included both sides of the Taiwan Strait as part of the Chinese nation, descendants of the Yan and Huang Emperors.

The former president expressed a deep hope for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to adhere to Sun's teachings, advocating for peace and avoiding war. "I hope people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait can remember Dr. Sun Yat-sen's teachings: to strive for peace and save China," Ma stated, underlining the importance of cooperation and cultural revitalization for the prosperity of future generations.

During his visit, Ma also inquired about Sun's height and shoe size, revealing his deep respect for Sun's intellectual legacy. Despite not viewing the current exhibition on the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, Ma's visit was a significant gesture toward understanding and acknowledging shared history.

After visiting Sun Yat-sen's residence, Ma plans to continue his journey to Zhuhai to inspect the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, further emphasizing the potential for cross-strait collaboration and understanding.
