TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former President Ma Ying-jeou's visit to China on Monday (April 1) has received affirmation from Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an and New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih.
However, the trip has drawn criticism from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Rosalia Wu, who accused Ma of willingly becoming the "best-supporting actor in the unification drama."
In contrast to the DPP, both Chiang and Hou, who jointly promoted the 2025 World Master Games on Monday, expressed their approval. Chiang, who will also host the Taipei-Shanghai Twin City Forum in July and August this year, stated that it would be beneficial as long as exchanges are conducted under conditions of equality, dignity, goodwill, and mutual benefit. He believed that the more tense cross-strait relations become, the more communication is needed.
New Taipei Mayor Hou echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that cross-strait relations must be conducted under conditions of equality, dignity, and friendliness. He stressed the importance of mutual understanding in reducing conflict.
