TAIPEI (TVBS News) — For the first time, Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu is set to preside over a multi-partisan negotiation on Monday (Feb. 5) afternoon to determine the date for the inaugural meeting of the new legislative term.

The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) has suggested that if the proposed start date of Feb. 6 is deemed too soon, the legislature could reconvene on Feb. 16, after the Lunar New Year, rather than waiting until the end of February.

The Kuomintang (KMT), however, said they are ready to convene at any time, as long as it doesn't result in legislators working over the holiday period.

Taking various factors into consideration, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) suggests sticking to tradition and reconvening on Feb. 23. DPP Legislator Rosalia Wu stressed that newly elected legislators could benefit from extra preparatory time.

The news of the negotiation comes days after the 11th Legislative Yuan elected Han Kuo-yu of the KMT and Johnny Chiang as the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively, on Feb. 1, marking a new chapter for the Congress.
