TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Newly-appointed Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu paid a visit to his predecessor Wang Jin-pyng on Thursday (Feb. 1) to seek counsel.
Han demonstrated respect for traditional decorum as he took his position beside Wang after the election, exemplifying the continuation of Kuomintang's (KMT) experience.
Han Kuo-yu stressed that as long as his agenda can be accomplished, the legislature does not need to engage in violent conduct, and police intervention would not be necessary.
On the same day, You Si-kun, who failed to secure another term, resigned his at-large seat in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). This gesture was praised and acknowledged by Lai Ching-te at his gratitude dinner.
Lai Ching-te spoke of his admiration for You's persistent commitment to democracy. The President-elect revealed that shortly after the Jan. 13, elections, You met with him and declared that if the DPP nominated him for legislative speaker, he would exhaust all efforts to secure the position.
You added that if he did not win the nomination, he would also resign as a legislator to cultivate new talent.
At the packed gratitude banquet in Taipei, Lai Ching-te encouraged his party colleagues, saying that they should anticipate future Legislative Yuan competitions and collaborations, and everyone should keep making strong efforts to push legislation forward.
