TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Penghu Tourism Department announced on Tuesday (Nov. 14) that the 2024 Penghu International Fireworks Festival will take place from May 2 to Aug. 30 in Magong city.
The festival, known for its drone and fireworks shows, is now set to begin at 8 p.m, according to Chen Mei-ling, director of the Penghu Tourism Department.
This change, however, has sparked public criticism, with concerns over the need for innovation and potential audience fatigue. Noise pollution issues have also been highlighted.
Traditionally, the Penghu Fireworks Festival occurs annually from May to June and is a key tourism event for the region. In a significant collaboration, the 2023 festival partnered with Marvel and Disney's 100th Anniversary celebrations, drawing over 500,000 visitors.
The festival's roots trace back to 2002, established after the China Airlines Flight 611 disaster severely impacted Penghu's tourism. To rejuvenate the industry, China Airlines organized fireworks displays and dance performances by flight attendants, laying the groundwork for the current Penghu International Fireworks Festival.
