HSINCHU (TVBS News) — A sinkhole appeared again at a construction site in Hsinchu County on Tuesday (Oct. 17), marking the third occurrence within three days.
The Hsin Yeh Construction site, located at Hsinchu County Xianzheng 7th St, a mere 300 meters from county offices, saw the collapse of a 2-meter wide and long sinkhole that continued to expand.
The location was perilously closer to residential areas, causing alarm among locals. Local authorities reported that initial assessments attribute the collapse to soil erosion caused by the influx of debris.
According to Chen Ying-chou, acting chief of the Hsinchu County Public Works Department, this was similar to the circumstances of the previous two collapses.
The first incident on Oct. 15 caused gas and water leaks, with the site having existing issues of lateral groove ruptures that led to soil flooding the construction site.
After the incident, construction operations at the site were ordered to halt by Hsinchu County authorities, and those involved may face penalties.
The latest collapse mirrors the first incident with a broken side drain triggering debris flow into the construction site, resulting in the loss of the foundation yet again.
