TAIPEI (TVBS News) — National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Wellington Koo refuted claims blaming the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for escalating tensions between China and Taiwan during a web interview with the 'Real Talk' on Monday (Oct. 16).
Koo reiterated that the actual risk stems from mainland China's refusal to abandon its military threat toward Taiwan.
Koo also criticized Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih for clinging to the "1992 Consensus" as the foundation for the cross-strait policy.
Koo stated that the framework, seen through China's lens, leaves no room for the existence of the Republic of China's Constitution.
Koo believes that Taiwanese people, living under the light of democratic freedom for decades, have cultivated a firm sense of identity. Peace across the Taiwan Strait, he notes, is an issue that many Taiwanese people and the international community are increasingly focused on.
Koo further warned that accepting the notion of "one country, two systems" would lead to the loss of democratic freedoms.
Views on Taiwanese national identity are diverging, with each camp offering varying interpretations. Ultimately, voters' decisions during Taiwan's 2024 presidential elections will significantly influence the future path of cross-strait relations.
