TAIPEI (TVBSNews) — Animal lovers in Taiwan have expressed their sadness following the passing of the beloved Taipei Zoo giant panda Tuan Tuan (團團), 18, which passed away on Saturday (Nov. 19).

The Taipei Zoo plans to hold an event to celebrate Tuan Tuan's life, with the date to be later announced.

Tuan Tuan was born in 2004. When he was four years old, he was gifted by China to Taiwan with another giant panda, Yuan Yuan (圓圓), in 2008.

They instantly became the Taipei Zoo's star attraction when he arrived. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan gave birth to two female pandas, Yuan Zhai (圓仔) in 2013 and Yuan Bao (圓寶) in 2020.

Regretfully, Tuan Tuan's health started to decline in August, and he was diagnosed with a brain lesion in September.

After suffering from several seizures on Nov. 19, the medical team feared that even if Tuan Tuan woke up, he would not live comfortably.

They decided to let Tuan Tuan die in his sleep.
