TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese media reported on Thursday (Aug. 29) that the Taiwan Railway Union (TWRU, 台灣鐵路產業工會) expressed concerns about the nomination of Executive Yuan spokesperson Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) as the new Minister of Transportation and Communications. The union cited Chen's lack of expertise in transportation as a significant issue.

TWRU Secretary-General Chu Chih-yu (朱智宇) criticized the potential appointment, stating, "This choice shows President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has half-abandoned transportation reform." Chu explained that Chen specializes in crisis management, but previous experience does not show expertise in transportation policies like pedestrian or railway security.

Chu also noted that Acting Minister Chen Yen-po (陳彥伯) can convince everyone because he has expertise in highway management. "Although he might need guidance in railway and aviation sectors," Chu added.

President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) have yet to confirm Chen Shih-kai's appointment. Former Transportation Minister Lee Men-yen (李孟諺) resigned due to an extramarital affair. Currently, Deputy Minister Chen Yen-po serves as acting minister.
