TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is poised to enter a super-aged society by 2025, with over 20% of its population aged 65 or older. This demographic shift has spurred significant changes in senior housing and caregiving needs.
According to the 2022 Senior Citizen Condition Survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, 380,000 individuals aged 55 to 65 prefer living independently, marking a 3.68% increase from five years ago.
The survey also revealed that only around 180,000 people wish to live with their children, a decrease of 3.59% compared to five years ago. Peggy Cheng (鄭佩琦), senior director and head of strategic consulting at JLL, echoed this trend, stating, "The supply of senior housing currently meets only one-fourth of the demand. We believe that due to the declining birth rate and the evolving concept of elderly care, the demand for senior housing is significant."
Most senior housing in Taiwan collaborates with nearby medical institutions, allowing physicians to provide on-site consultations and reducing the need for hospital visits for minor ailments.
As Taiwan's perspective on eldercare evolves, the market for senior housing is expanding. These residences not only provide meals and cleaning services but also offer age-friendly courses and medical team support, highlighting the untapped potential of the eldercare industry.
