TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The University Admission Committee (大學考試入學分發委員會) announced the results for Taiwan's 2024 academic year university admissions on Thursday (Aug. 15), revealing a record-low admission rate of 94.62% and 2,505 unfilled spots, the lowest figures in three years.

During a press conference on Thursday, the committee reported that 61 universities and 1,839 departments participated in the admissions process, offering a total of 37,264 spots, down by 5,215 from the previous year. Chairman Shen Meng-ju (沈孟儒) noted that 37,069 candidates registered their preferences, with 35,076 being admitted, resulting in the lowest rate in three years.

Shen Sheng-chih (沈聖智), the committee's executive secretary, highlighted that 30 universities filled all their spots, including 19 public and 11 private institutions. However, 31 universities—12 public and 19 private—along with 262 departments, failed to fill their quotas. The total number of unfilled spots decreased by 3,959 from last year, marking the lowest in three years. Notably, the arts departments had the highest unfilled rate at 27.97%.

Hsuan Chuang University (玄奘大學) and Aletheia University (真理大學) had vacancy rates exceeding 75%, with rates of 95% and 79%, respectively. Three other universities, including Nanhua University (南華大學), University of Kang Ning (康寧大學), and Dayeh University (大葉大學), had vacancy rates over 50%.

The humanities and social sciences departments had a vacancy rate of 9.05%, consistent with previous years. National Cheng Kung University's (成功大學) history department, which previously drew attention for having no applicants, has now filled all its spots.
