TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Olympic Games have officially kicked off in Paris amid high anticipation. The Chinese Taipei team has secured six boxing slots, and the athletes are eager to showcase their best performances on the international stage.
Huang Hsiao-wen (黃筱雯) will compete first in the women’s 54-kilogram category at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday (July 27) Taiwan time against Montenegro’s Bojana Gojkovic. Having clinched bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Huang hopes to bring out her best. "I focus on giving my best performance. I don’t set expectations for which medal I might win; I just give it my all," said Huang.
If Huang advances, she will face Bulgaria’s top seed, Stanimira Petrova, who has won two European Championships golds and two European Games titles.
Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) will compete in the 60-kilogram category at 10:50 p.m. on Saturday against South Korea's Oh Yeonji, a formidable opponent who won gold at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and has three Asian Championships golds as well as a bronze from last year’s World Championships.
Taiwanese "boxing queen" Chen Nien-chin (陳念琴) will face María Moronta of the Dominican Republic in the 66-kilogram round of 32 at 3:36 a.m. next Monday (July 29). Lai Chu-en (賴主恩), seeded second in the men’s 63.5-kilogram category, has a first-round bye and will compete in the round of 16 at 3:04 a.m. next Tuesday (July 30) against an undecided opponent.
Kan Chia-wei (甘家葳), seeded eighth in the 71-kilogram category, will face American Omari Jones, a World Championship silver medalist, in the round of 16 at 5:48 p.m. next Wednesday (July 31).
Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷), the top seed in the women’s 57-kilogram category, also has a first-round bye. She will fight the winner of the bout between Congo's Marcelat Sakobi Matshu and Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova at 9:30 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 2).
As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on these athletes as they strive for Olympic glory.
