KEELUNG (TVBS News) — A landslide at the Beining Road entrance to Keelung City's Chaojing Park buried 11 vehicles, leading to 2 people being injured on Monday (June 3).

The landslide occurred at around 2:30 pm. One of the vehicle owners later related the horrific incident, saying, "We all pulled to the right when we saw small rocks falling. However, we were instantly buried when the massive landslide happened since we were unable to escape in time.”

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital said two people received light injuries and were conscious, adding that they should be discharged soon.

The Keelung City Fire Department added that there are no reports of others trapped under the debris.

According to Liberty Times Net (LTN), geologist Lee Chyi-tyi pointed out the landslide resulted from the consecutive heavy rainfall last week. Massive volumes of water seeped into the cracks in the rock, exerting pressure that partially loosened the rocks, causing the landslide.

Lee further explained that the landslide is unrelated to the previous Hualien earthquake because Keelung's seismicity is almost only Grade 1 or Grade 2, concluding that the impact is minor.

He warned people to leave immediately when they witness small rock falls, as this is generally followed by large-scale landslides.

According to Chen Wen-jui, director general of the Highway Bureau, the road must be fixed within seven working days. Hopefully, it can be finished by June 11.
