Typhoon Maliksi to hit Guangdong, weaken by tomorrow (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署, CWA) announced that as a frontal system approaches on Friday (May 31), the western part of Taiwan will experience brief showers and thunderstorms, while the eastern part will see mostly cloudy skies with a chance of localized thunderstorms or heavy rain in the afternoon.

Weather expert Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) noted that a tropical depression in the South China Sea will intensify into the second typhoon of the season, named Typhoon Maliksi (馬力斯), today.

However, it will be a "short-lived typhoon," weakening into a tropical depression after making landfall in Guangdong (廣東) tomorrow.

The weather is expected to cool slightly in the north and northeast from Saturday (June 1) to Sunday (June 2) due to the influence of the frontal system or low-pressure area, with significant rainfall, especially from Saturday afternoon through Sunday.

The CWA forecasts on Facebook that the rain will be noticeable over the weekend, with temperatures dropping slightly. Thunderstorms or brief showers are expected in the western and northeastern parts, while the eastern and southeastern areas will also see brief showers or thunderstorms.

By Sunday afternoon, the weather around Taiwan will shift to a northeasterly wind pattern, cooling the north and northeast with highs dropping to around 26 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows to 21 or 22 degrees Celsius.

From Monday (June 3) to Wednesday (June 5), as the frontal system moves to the Bashi Channel (巴士海峽), northeastern winds will bring cooler weather to northern Taiwan, with brief showers expected in the central, southern, and southeastern regions.

On Thursday (June 6), moisture will increase, especially in the central and northern areas, raising the chance of brief showers, while other regions will remain mostly cloudy with occasional localized showers.

Typhoon Ewiniar (艾維尼) will pass to the northeast of the Ryukyu Islands (琉球群島) without directly affecting Taiwan's weather, expected to transition into an extratropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
