TAIPEI (TVBS News) — U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, along with a bipartisan delegation, arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday (May 29), amidst recent controversies and physical confrontations in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan over parliamentary reforms.

Duckworth's visit, which follows closely after the Joint Sword-2024A military exercise by China and during a critical period of legislative amendments in Taiwan, underscores the United States' commitment to President Lai Ching-te and the Taiwanese people.

Upholding Democracy Amidst Chaos

During an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, Duckworth shared her views on the chaotic scenes witnessed in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, stating, "Democracy is messy. Democracy can be hard, but it is far better to have a messy democracy than to be controlled by an authoritarian regime." Her comments come at a time when Taiwan's parliament has been embroiled in disputes over the exercise of legislative power, with significant public outcry against perceived undemocratic practices and infringements on civil rights outside the Legislative Yuan.

A Symbolic Gesture of Support

The visit by Duckworth, along with Senators Dan Sullivan, Chris Coons, and Laphonza Butler, marks the first Senate delegation to Taiwan following the inauguration of Taiwan's president. This visit not only represents a gesture of solidarity but also occurs shortly after China's military exercises near Taiwan, highlighting the geopolitical significance of their presence. Duckworth's statement post-visit emphasizes the U.S.'s pledge to support Taiwan, reflecting the broader international interest in Taiwan's democratic health and sovereignty.

As Taiwan navigates through its legislative reforms and external pressures, the international community's attention, particularly from the United States, serves as a reminder of the global support for democratic values and self-determination. Duckworth's visit and remarks offer encouragement for Taiwan's continued pursuit of a democratic path, despite the challenges it faces.
