TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported on Tuesday (May 28) that it detected three instances of Chinese military aircraft crossing the Taiwan Strait's Median Line and entering the southwestern air defense identification zone within the 24-hour period ending at 6 a.m. that day. This activity comes closely on the heels of China concluding its two-day "Joint Sword-2024A" military exercises.

Increased Military Presence

In addition to the aerial incursions, the ministry also spotted seven Chinese naval vessels and four coast guard ships around the Taiwan Strait during the same timeframe. Taiwan's armed forces responded by closely monitoring and deploying aircraft, ships, and shore-based missile systems to address these activities. This heightened military presence underscores the ongoing tensions in the region.

International Reactions

Following the end of China's military drills, U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Taiwan, signaling strong U.S. support for Taiwan's sovereignty amidst escalating military threats from China. This visit highlights the international concern over Taiwan's position in the power struggle between the U.S. and China and the potential for further escalation.

As Taiwan faces increased military activities from China, the international community watches closely, assessing the implications for regional stability and the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. The situation underscores the delicate balance Taiwan must maintain in navigating its security and diplomatic relations.
