TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) revealed on Thursday (May 23) that Guatemala's President Bernardo Arévalo, who was unable to visit Taiwan in person due to official duties, requested a video call on Tuesday (May 21) to congratulate President Lai Ching-te and express hopes for stronger bilateral ties.

This gesture came shortly after Lai and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim were sworn in one day earlier (May 20), an event attended by heads of state from Latin America, showcasing the region's support for Taiwan.

MOFA highlighted the virtual exchange, underscoring the importance of Guatemala's continued friendship.

MOFA's Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs Deputy Director Chang Tzu-hsin revealed that Guatemala sent its Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez to Taiwan to extend congratulations, further solidifying the bond between the two nations.

The inauguration saw a notable presence of Latin American dignitaries, with Haiti's Ambassador to Taiwan, Roudy Stanley Penn, representing his country due to the new government's ongoing formation. MOFA expressed gratitude for the support from Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasizing the significance of such international backing for democratic Taiwan.

As Taiwan welcomes this reaffirmation of friendship and support from Guatemala and other Latin American countries, the gesture by President Arévalo not only strengthens diplomatic relations but also highlights the global recognition of Taiwan's democratic values.

This event marks a promising continuation of Taiwan's engagement with its international partners, fostering a sense of unity and shared democratic ideals.
