Kaohsiung police boost MRT security after metro attack (TVBS News)

KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — In response to a recent violent incident on the metro, Kaohsiung police have ramped up security measures across the Kaohsiung MRT system. Starting from Wednesday (May 22) through Monday (May 27), over a hundred additional officers are being deployed daily to ensure the safety of commuters.

This security boost comes after a 20-year-old nursing student from Pingtung, who studies in Kaohsiung, attacked passengers randomly on the Taichung MRT, having purchased the weapon in Kaohsiung's Luzhu District. To prevent copycat crimes, the police have intensified their presence on the Kaohsiung MRT, creating a safety net for passengers.

Enhanced Security Measures

The police have planned to increase patrols both inside and outside MRT carriages. The frequency of patrols by the MRT police teams has doubled, with officers entering the first and third carriages to enhance visibility. Additionally, 60 members of the Special Police are deployed daily, focusing on major stations such as Formosa Boulevard Station (美麗島站), Zuoying Station (左營站), and Hamasen Station (哈瑪星站) to conduct thorough inspections of halls and platforms.

Local police stations, responsible for the areas surrounding MRT stations, have also increased their patrols. Officers are not only patrolling the stations and platforms but are also entering the trains to inspect each carriage, thereby increasing the density of police patrols throughout the MRT system. The Criminal Investigation Bureau has scheduled shifts to ensure the safety of the MRT, with over a hundred officers dedicated to this task daily.

The Kaohsiung police's proactive approach aims to restore public confidence in the safety of the MRT system, ensuring that passengers can travel without fear of violence.
