TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A tragic accident at the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (台積電, TSMC) construction site in Arizona led to the death of a truck driver on Wednesday (May 15).

The incident, involving the depressurization of a waste sulfuric acid removal tank, occurred at the Phoenix facility, marking a somber moment for the company renowned for its advanced microchip manufacturing.

Cesar Anguiano-Guitron, 41, was fatally injured when he exited his vehicle to inspect a loss of pressure and was struck by an object, propelling him 6 meters away.

Despite immediate medical attention, Anguiano-Guitron succumbed to his injuries. Police are currently investigating the accident, which fortunately did not result in any injuries to TSMC employees or construction workers, nor did it damage the facility.

TSMC, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has ambitious plans to produce its cutting-edge microchips in the United States. This initiative received a significant boost last month when the Biden Administration announced it would provide up to US$6.6 billion (approximately NT$212.2 billion) to support the expansion of TSMC's Arizona plant. This funding aligns with a comprehensive 2022 law praised by President Joe Biden, aimed at revitalizing the U.S. semiconductor industry.

As TSMC continues to navigate these complexities, the support from the U.S. government highlights the strategic importance of semiconductor production in the global tech landscape.
