Taiwan’s absence at WHA: A lost chance for global health
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Premier Chen Chien-jen expressed disappointment Thursday (May 9) over Taiwan's lack of invitation to the World Health Assembly (WHA), calling it a loss for both Taiwan and the world.
The WHA, set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 27, has yet to extend an invitation to Taiwan. Chen criticized the decision, stating it contradicts the WHA's vision of "leave no one behind" and is influenced by political factors.
Chen, in an interview aired on a web program, highlighted Taiwan's internationally recognized healthcare system, including its health insurance and epidemic prevention mechanisms. He stressed that Taiwan is willing and capable of sharing its expertise with the world and could play a significant role at the WHA.
The premier urged China to understand the benefits of peaceful exchanges between the two sides through equality, democracy, and dialogue. Such exchanges, he said, would be mutually beneficial, fostering positive interactions across the strait.
From a public health perspective, Chen emphasized the need to care for every city worldwide. He noted that any outbreak of a strange or mysterious infectious disease anywhere should prompt immediate global cooperation to eradicate it. Participation in the WHA, he added, would also enhance Taiwan's public health knowledge.
