Foreign Minister Joseph Wu assures diplomatic ties stable (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) revealed on Thursday (May 9) that China has been targeting two of Taiwan's diplomatic allies for long-term infiltration, causing internal turmoil. This situation poses a hidden concern for Taiwan's diplomatic relations in the long run, although no immediate changes are expected.
Wu, who is set to become the Secretary-General of the National Security Council (國安會秘書長), expressed his concerns about China's actions but reassured that Taiwan's diplomatic relationships currently face no issues.
During a radio interview, he shared that despite the pressure of diplomatic allies breaking off relations, the president has repeatedly encouraged him to continue serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, assuring him that "the fault does not lie with [him]."
Wu highlighted the financial demands from some diplomatic allies requesting US$6 billion in aid, a demand Taiwan could not meet. Despite these challenges, Taiwan regularly reviews its diplomatic relations and invests resources to assist allies needing United Nations support for reconstruction, for which these countries have expressed gratitude.
He emphasized the hard work of Taiwanese diplomats abroad and called for more public support and encouragement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to enhance relations through cooperation with like-minded countries, including the United States, Japan, and Canada.
