TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The United States Seventh Fleet announced that the USS Halsey, a Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday (May 8), underscoring the United States' commitment to the principle of free navigation for all nations.

This move comes at a time when the international community is closely watching the Taiwan Strait, especially with the upcoming inauguration of Lai Ching-te (賴清德) as the President-elect on May 20.

The Seventh Fleet stated that the USS Halsey's transit through the Taiwan Strait was conducted in accordance with international law, which allows for the freedom of navigation and overflight in the high seas. This operation demonstrates the U.S. military's continued commitment to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law permits.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) noted that the U.S. warship passed through the strait from north to south on Wednesday morning.

The Taiwanese military closely monitored the surrounding maritime and aerial dynamics throughout the transit, maintaining a normal state of readiness and demonstrating comprehensive surveillance capabilities over the situation in the Strait.

As the region's geopolitical landscape remains under intense scrutiny, the actions of the United States and Taiwan's preparedness highlight the ongoing complexities and strategic importance of the Taiwan Strait.

The international community awaits further developments, especially with the impending leadership change in Taiwan, which could influence future navigational operations and diplomatic relations in the region.
