Apple joins forces with TSMC to develop AI chips: WSJ (Reuters)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Apple Inc. is actively pursuing the AI race, working closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to develop AI chips suitable for data center servers, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Monday (May 6).
The report said that the project has been underway for several years, but the launch date for the latest chip remains uncertain. The server chips Apple is developing are likely to be used primarily for running AI models, rather than training them.
Analysts believe that Apple's existing chip capabilities could be a key to gaining an edge in the AI field in the future. There are rumors that the upcoming iPad Pro will skip the Apple M3 chip and directly incorporate the new M4 series chip, which will be able to execute some AI functions.
Most of Apple's AI features are expected to be announced at the new iPhone launch in September this year. However, some AI features may be unveiled earlier at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
