Taiwan braces plum rain season in May (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As May begins, Taiwan enters its plum rain season, marked by frequent rainfall across the island due to a southward-moving frontal system, said weather expert Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) on Wednesday (May 1).

Peng highlighted that the day signifies the start of May and the commencement of a season characterized by its consistent precipitation, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms.

Weather Outlook

Peng forecasts that the northeast monsoon will persist into Thursday, with a cloud and rain band moving in from southern China, increasing the likelihood of rainfall.

He advises the public to carry rain gear to protect against sudden heavy rain and strong winds.

Temperatures in the north are expected to drop significantly over the next two days, with highs of only 23 to 25 degrees Celsius and lows dipping to 21 degrees at night.

Weekend Predictions and Safety Reminders

Looking ahead to the weekend, Peng anticipates more stable weather conditions, though the eastern half of Taiwan may still experience rainfall. The western half is expected to be partly cloudy or sunny, with the possibility of brief thunderstorms in the mountains during the afternoon.

Peng also warns of the potential instability in mountainous regions due to recent frequent rainfall and earthquakes. He urges the public to avoid mountainous activities for safety reasons temporarily.
