TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The newly appointed Minister of Environment, Peng Chi-ming, warned on Friday (April 26) that southern Taiwan needs to be on high alert due to incoming thunderstorms that could potentially cause disasters.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a heavy rain advisory for Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County. The weather front is expected to bring a high probability of heavy rain from Taoyuan to Miaoli, Chiayi, and southwards, as well as the Penghu region and the mountainous areas of Nantou County. Residents are advised to be cautious of lightning strikes and strong gusts of wind and to be wary of flooding in low-lying areas, landslides, falling rocks, and mudslides in mountainous regions.

From Friday until Saturday, the weather front will affect the western half of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, bringing brief showers or thunderstorms. There is a chance of heavy rain in central and southern regions, and other areas may also experience brief showers or thunderstorms.

Saturday evening, the weather front will gradually move northwards, bringing a chance of brief showers or thunderstorms and localized heavy rain to areas north of central Taiwan. Other regions, including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, may also experience brief showers or thunderstorms.

Starting Friday afternoon, stronger gusts of wind are expected in areas from Taoyuan to Miaoli, Orchid Island, and Green Island. From Friday until Saturday morning, low clouds or localized fog may affect visibility in Kinmen and Matsu.
