Taipei egg prices drop as summer demand cools (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Egg Merchants Association announced on Tuesday (April 23) that egg prices will drop NT$2 per 600g due to the low summer demand.

The association's executive director, Liu Wei-chih, said the farm price will drop to NT$37.5 per catty from NT$39.5. Additionally, on Thursday, the trading price would drop from NT$49 to NT$47 per catty.

Liu explained that consumers' willingness to purchase has been suppressed by the heat and concerns about food safety, which has resulted in slow sales of eggs and potential stockpiling.

The director expected demand to increase as Mother's Day approaches, and said that dining out or buying cakes for celebrations would contribute to increased egg sales. However, Liu emphasized that the current egg supply is sufficient, and price fluctuations are based on market mechanisms.

Similar estimations are made by the Ministry of Agriculture, which states Taiwan has 33.95 million laying hens, up roughly 260,000 from the previous week. The daily egg production is around 119,750 boxes, each holding approximately 200 eggs. This production almost satisfies the 120,000 box daily demand.
