TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) President Wang Yao-ting has decided to stay on at the helm of the company, reversing his earlier decision to resign. Wang announced his decision at a press conference on Monday (April 22), stating that he believes this is the best decision for Taipower.

Wang, who has been with Taipower for 36 years since graduation, said, "I am not afraid, I will continue to be responsible for Taipower." His decision to stay comes after Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua and acting chairman of Taipower Tseng Wen-sheng urged him to continue his work for the company and the country.

Wang Yao-ting had previously announced on Saturday (April 20) that he would resign from his position at Taipower, planning to submit his resignation to the Ministry of Economic Affairs on Monday.

The decision comes amid recent power outages in the Taoyuan area. On April 15, four units of Taipower tripped, causing a tight power supply. Taipower activated a demand response mechanism to buy power from significant power users.

On April 19, Wang pointed out that the company spent NT$24 million that day to buy power at NT$12 per kilowatt hour (kWh), with more than ten large enterprises, including semiconductor, electronics, petrochemical, and steel companies, participating.

Taipower stated that the demand response mechanism has been in place since 1979 and is not a recent development. This mechanism, commonly used worldwide, serves as a short-term emergency response when large units fail.

Taipower urged society to fully support power plant construction to avoid power shortages, emphasizing that a stable power system requires supply and demand management.
