TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday (April 19) awarded the Order of Dr. Sun Yat-sen with Grand Cordon to Morris Chang, founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), thanking him for his contributions that have helped Taiwan secure a firm standing on the global stage.

During her speech at the Presidential Office, Tsai recalled that six years ago, she had bestowed the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon on Chang, in recognition of his significant contributions to Taiwan's high-tech industry and economic development. She thanked Chang for showcasing Taiwan to the world through his technical expertise, innovation, and passion.

Tsai expressed her honor in presenting the Order of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a symbol of the nation's highest honor, to Chang. She thanked him for representing her six times at the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

Chang, often hailed as the "Father of Taiwan's Semiconductor Industry," is a great entrepreneur and a respected senior whom Tsai consults on national affairs. Tsai noted that his story of struggle is an essential chapter in the history of Taiwan and the global semiconductor industry.

Tsai praised Chang's foresight and macro perspective, which led TSMC's innovative business model to guide Taiwan's semiconductor industry to international prominence at a critical time. She also lauded his efforts in localizing the supply chain and driving the development of the "silicon shield."

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including President-elect Lai Ching-te, Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim, and Sandra Oudkirk, director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
