TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Federation of Medical Unions (TFMU) issued a statement Tuesday (April 16), expressing their belief that former Democratic Progressive Party legislator Chiu Tai-yuan is not the optimal choice to be the minister of health and welfare.

The statement comes after Chui was rumored to be appointed to the role, sparking criticism from the medical and social welfare sectors.

The TFMU pointed out that he had previously refused to engage in dialogue with the union and consider their opinions.

The League For Persons With Disabilities also voiced their disapproval of Chiu, citing his past opposition to amendments to regulations aimed at improving conditions for disabled individuals.

The TFMU outlined five essential qualities they expect from the new Health and Welfare Minister: a comprehensive vision for healthcare, a determination for reform, respect and communication with grassroots, professional respect and independence, and professional ethics and labor relations.

The TFMU emphasized that amid a crisis of rapid workforce loss in the healthcare industry, the new minister needs to deeply understand the importance of different roles within the healthcare system.

The TFMU also stressed the need for the minister to have the courage to implement reforms, resist corporate influence, effectively communicate with the grassroots, and prioritize labor relations and occupational safety. This, the TFMU said, is crucial to address the challenges facing Taiwan's healthcare sector and promote quality improvement and public health.
